Cold Sterilization Solutions - When used properly can be an effective sterilizing tool!

Ideally, items entering a patient's mouth or coming into contact with oral tissues should be heat sterilized; however, when this is not option because the device or instrument cannot withstand the heat sterilization process, a high-level cold sterilization solution should be used. Instruments sterilized in this manner should be rinsed with sterile water, dried and placed in a sterile container (if not used immediately).

Effective and proper use of cold sterilization is dependent on many factors including:

  • The use of chemicals classified as "sterilants". Those classified only as "disinfectants" are not adequate.
  • The physical properties of the item being sterilized. It must be relatively smooth, impervious to moisture, and be of a shape that permits all surfaces to be exposed to the cold sterile solution.
  • Adequate exposure to all surfaces, both interior and exterior. To be sterilized the materials must be clean and arranged in the cold sterile to assure total immersion.
  • Most cold sterile solutions come in solutions consisting of two parts that when added together form what is referred to as an "activated" solution. The shelf life of activated solutions is indicated in the instructions and such instructions should be followed closely.
  • Contact time is the single most important variable distinguishing sterilization from high-level disinfection with FDA-cleared liquid cold sterile solutions.

There are several cold sterilization solutions on the market to choose from which will vary in contact time, safety precautions, efficacy, and instrument compatibility. Choosing the a cold sterile can be difficult.
